The thrills were greater than ever at the 2016 Mercedes Benz Fashion Week festival.
The country’s glamazons were out in full force from 15-20 May, as Mercedes Benz Fashion Week struck the runways of Sydney. There were thrills in the form of popping prints (Emma Mulholland, Discount Universe), bold shapes (Maticevski) and abundant frills (Macgraw). But there was subtlety, too, from the likes of Christopher Esber, Akira and KitX, which caught the eyes of editors across the nation.
Nostalgia was the name of the game this year, with Vogue Australia reporting a resurgence of fashion from the 2000s, while Harper’s Bazaar Australia editors noted the return of 90s grunge beauty from a number of designers.
Model-watchers went wild over the appearance of American talent Bella Hadid in the Misha Collection show. Off the catwalk, meanwhile, a star-studded crowd of bloggers, editors and entertainment personalities, alike, turned heads with their front-row fashion. Instagram favourite Margaret Zhang pulled off a string of winning street style looks, as did Vogue Australia’s Christine Centenera, and The Chronicles of Her blogger Carmen Hamilton.
The sets, of course, were as spectacular as ever – kaftan star Camilla Franks hosted her show aboard a flash 45-metre cruising vessel, while the By Johnny show featured a giant blow-up igloo of sorts. The most talked-about event, however, had to be Oscar de la Renta’s Australian Fashion Week debut, featuring none other than home-grown Victoria’s Secret angel, Shanina Shaik. The performance was dazzling – a most fitting end to a week of incredible style wins bound to make waves in Australia and around the world.
